Epilogue

Two months later….

Verity sat opposite her queen as the older woman read the latest progress report on their budding alliance with the orcs.

It was a very promising start, helped in no small way by her visit several weeks before to negotiate one to one with the Warchief himself. Verity fought back a blush as she recalled the other activities the Warchief and herself had engaged in. It seemed like such a long time ago now, but the memories had kept her warm on many a lonely night since.

“He writes highly of you.”

Verity blinked, focusing her attention back on her queen. She couldn’t help the genuine smile that formed at those words, “He thinks very differently than past Warchiefs.”

Queen May raised an eyebrow, “That he thinks at all is a miracle.” She sat back in her chair, tapping her lip, gray eyes shrewd as she looked across the table at Verity.

“What would you think of being assigned to their camp for the remainder of the negotiations?”

“I would be safe there,” Verity replied, understanding what her queen was asking, “I do not believe the Warchief would allow any harm would come to me.”

At least, she hoped not. But excitement rose in her chest anyway, the memories of that night flickering through her mind again.

“Good,” Said the queen, “You leave in the morning.”

As Verity stood, curtsied and took her leave, a quiet joy bloomed in her heart.
